Trickle-Down economics...The Rich... and jealousy

I don't like reading newspapers.

I know, I know some people might say 'how do I know what's going on in the world?"

They are always pretty much negative and I have no interest in reading it.

I really don't give a flying monkeys what the celebrities get up to, or who they're shagging or how many people they've shagged...vacuous and a distraction, at best.

Every time I've read an article about something I actually know something about, it's 5% truth 95% total bullshit. I've asked friends and clients about this and they have ALL had the same experience reading something they know about. So partial truth.

But this week I noticed a shift in the tone of the letters people were writing in.

Our politicians (especially labour) have continually stirred the pot of jealousy against the rich.

I'm not rich. I'm not even close. Thanks to some idiot policies I'm a lot worse off than I was 10 years ago, and I try to be sensible. I grew up in a very socialist household during the Thatcher era.

The letters were written from a cross section of society (people who said they earned 10K and upwards).

Rather than slagging off the rich they said we needed them.

I sat up straighter. I read it again. I agree with them.

My mum would never admit this but we grew up without much money. I watched my parents struggle financially. Bills coming in had to be paid and sometimes these bills put a strain on us.

My brother and I couldn't go to University because my parents combined income was probably slightly more than 16K. Which really isn't enough to do anything except survive with. But was over the means tested threshold. So we both waited till we were 23, and went back as mature students.

I digress.

The rich have money. This policy of jealousy and pointing the finger is laughable.

A banker is paid £1,000,000 bonus. WOW. HOW DARE THEY...

45% tax. 11.5% National insurance Thats now £435,000. That's a pretty big difference straight away. That actually means that the government whose representatives are saying we should be jealous get more of the bankers money than they do, for doing nothing.

Another way of looking at it is a rich man earns nothing for his/her first 206 days of the year. So they work from January to late June for nothing.

For NOTHING.

They get up and are usually in work for 6.30am/7.00am and are still there 12-14 hours later. They work weekends. They don't get holidays, or get called back from them.

Before anyone tries making it a jealousy issue. Walk a mile in their shoes.

Do you remember the reaction from the people on benefits when it was suggested they contribute to society for their handouts, by doing some work?

I'm jealous of them... ok I'm not really.

But these people are sensible so when things get bad, they retract their spending and start living to their means.

The personal trainer goes. The nanny gets cut. The gardener goes. The new car can wait. The priority is their children's education until that too becomes too expensive.

So by over taxing the rich you actually end up hurting the small people. Again!

I want bankers, lawyers in fact anyone who earns good money to earn a huge bundle. If the jealous arseholes think £1,000,000 is too much, I want them to earn 6 million.

So they can employ builders to refurbish their houses. Personal trainers to train their whole family. House keepers, gardeners, new cars, clothing... the list goes on and on.

Each one of those people pays TAX. So guess what? The pot gets BIGGER. Less people are on the take and the economy starts to move upwards. Cutting tax to the rich makes a lot more sense. It's also been proven that far less tax has been collected since they went this route.

I come from a place where if I make a mistake I put it right. Fast. Fail quickly is my motto. If something doesn't work, change it.

My final point is this.

I don't want politicians to stop high earners. I might not be rich but I'd like to think that my son has a chance to be one day. Closing that pathways doesn't make it impossible, just way harder for him.

I want our children to be able to aspire to be greater than we are. Not kept down.

It's way past the time that we vilified the rich. It's time we recognised the contribution they make to society on so many levels.

I have been lucky to train wealthier people for most of my career.

These people aren't greedy nasty people. The very worse of them in my 28 year career has probably done more for charitable causes than everyone else I know put together, both financially and literally.

When politicians go down the route of stirring up jealousy, it's time we shouted them down for the idiots they are. It's time that we wrote a little reminder to ourselves and put it on the fridge door.

A reminder that come election day we show we remembered their idiocy, and the cost we are continually paying for it...

By voting them out.
