A new week...

Today I started the week slightly differently to normal. I usually have a massage on a Monday, but this week Alek wasn't around so I decided to have a second swim session.

Now I ALWAYS struggle on my Tuesday session. I start work at 6.30am and by the time I finish at 2pm there isn't time to eat. Then it's rush rush rush to get to the pool. The train is always late, and I always walk in a couple of minutes past my 3pm start time (I hate being late!).

This afternoon I left early, I had some clients out this week. I got home at 2.20pm, had a NO-Xplode, then walked to the gym.

I arrived at 2.45pm and was in the pool 12 minutes early.

Why am I telling you this?

Because here is the important bit. I spent that 12 minutes warming up, so by the time my sessions was due to begin I was ready physically and mentally to get going. My session subsequently was at least 200% better.

12 years ago I used to have personal training in karate. The sensei was very experienced but I didn't like the warmup. I'm a big guy, 90kgs takes a little while to warm up and I'm not overly impressed with general martial arts warmups. This is 12 years ago and I think with the MMA and the development of strength and conditioning that perhaps a big step forward has been taken.

So I used to arrive 30-45 minutes early and take myself through a full athletic warmup, light shadow boxing, katas, forms and combinations, so by the time my session began I was prepared.

If you have personal training think about this carefully. One client shows up late, you have to warm them up and prepare them to train, usually this would involve switching off their stressors, then try and move them forward when they usually aren't in the right state of mind.

Now imagine how would an elite athlete behave?

I'd imagine they would turn up ready. Physically, mentally and emotionally prepared to take care of business. That includes water, plasters and anything else they might need during the session.

In my kit bag I used to have everything. Spare shoes, laces, waterproofs, water, salt tablets, vicks vapour rub, ice packs, plasters, tape, bandages, chalk... literally everything I might need.

It's all about preparation, if you prepare well then your session are going to be substantially more productive.
