It's boring....

I was in the pool this afternoon. Something was going on and there was a minor crisis. I couldn't get to where I usually meet my coach and I could see he was still training the man before me.

So I got on with it. I know he likes me to do either one or two 200m freestyle warmups so I got started.

After my first 200m I crossed over lanes and he hadn't actually noticed me. His previos client was saying how boring swimming is.

Everything can be boring if you aren't present. Sure swimming up and down, up and down, up and down is boring if you are looking for a change of scenery, or you want someone to chat to, it's not going to happen unless you can talk underwaternese, or your eyesight is so good you can watch everything at a microscopic level. You have to change you relationship to what you are doing.

I can't run on the treadmill. I honestly hate it. Running is for outside in my world. Running is brilliant if you have dogs and even better if you have a few mates to go with. That more or less describes my childhood. Every morning and every night, I would give my two Irish setters a 7 mile run. Ok so there was this girls who lived about 2 miles away that I had a major crush on. But those runs and my boxing training runs, are how running should be. My outward journey was a 200m pavement before I turned right and ran across fields and through a wood. My homeward journey, a 3 mile riverside run from Farningham to South Darenth and then a half mile road run home. Not a moment of boredom.
Totally exhilarating.

Swimming was always very different. Each length is a combination of strokes, I use every stroke to try and perfect my movement, it becomes a flowing series of strokes each one that I am trying to get exactly right, adjust then go again. 12 times each length, for 40 to 80 lengths. Sometimes I am mindful of the 'catch', other times my hand entry, other times what my legs are doing to my body position in the water.

It's more or less the same when I train strength in the gym. Recently I have really concentrated on my form and feeling each exercise.

Nothing should ever be boring if you fully engage it. It's very seldom that I ever meet anyone who is boring. Sometimes I might be chatting to someone and my friends will roll their eyes, it pisses me off. I like talking to all sorts of people, even if their interests aren't the same as mine.
