The Future of Fitness continued...

So yesterday I talked a little about fitness. I don't really think that the future will be that much different from what we have now.

I have always had this theory that people that train only want a combination of three things:

They want to look better;

They want to feel better;

or

They want too perform better;

So what could this look like in the future?

You want to Look better...

You could choose the drugs route. Steroids, Human Growth Hormone, fat metabolisers and just about any kind of man made drug that might change how you look.

Surprised I suggested this?

Don't be. I would challenge every single cover model to prove that they are drug free, and we'd find very few that are. Since the early 80s I have been buying fitness and bodybuilding magazines, on the covers and inside men and women supposedly taking this supplement or that supplement that have made them huge or ripped or made them strong. In reality, drugs. I would be genuinely surprised if any of them took those supplements or were drug free, that's just the reality of the situation.

You could choose to optimise yourself using only the purest foods available. Organic pure foods, specifically formulated and taken in exactly the right quantities to give you a lean, hard figure or physique. Supplemented with vitamins and minerals to help augment the functions of the body, in the right quantities, you'd look good, not as big or muscular but definitely healthier.

You want to Feel Better...

Usually this comes from a combination of things:

  • Pain somewhere in your body
  • Situations that actually make you feel sick, unwell or in pain
  • Stress in whichever form it takes

So address them. A couple of weeks ago I heard stress described as leaving too many loops open. Do you have loads of things outstanding?

This year we did Christmas on Christmas eve. I cooked our Christmas dinner and served it up about 6.30/ 7pm.

I didn't buy a bird. I bought a deboned version from M&S.  It took 90 minutes to cook and tasted amazing. I wasn't stressed because if I'd forgotten anything I cold have nipped out for some last minute shopping, again took the stress out of it.

We also decided to open our presents after dinner, leaving our stockings till the morning.

This meant that I got to set Zack's Xboxone up, and spend time playing it with him. Next morning we could sleep in. For breakfast we had left overs from the dinner and we could spend the whole day as a family. Awesome and TOTALLY stress free. What an amazing difference.

So look at what causes your stress and close the loop.

If you are in pain, figure it out. Start at your ankles and work up. The feet are in contact with the ground so everything you do will effect your kinetic chain. Listen to how you walk, do you slap? Are you heavy footed? Does the rhythm beat differently?

Then start listening to how you feel. If you're tired, rest. Ok I know that sounds over simplistic...

In 1987 I part owned a research and development company. I am an early starter so I'd get to the office between 5 and 6am, I like working early because the phones didn't start ringing till 9am, and I could get loads done.

My partners were very different. One liked starting at 9am, the other 2pm and the last one would wander in around 5 or 6pm.

But they all expected me to stay till they finished. Which as the youngest member of the team I did. It became normal for me to work 18 hour days, 6 or 7 days a week. Then one night I met a girl and I wanted to see her. So at 6pm I left for my first date. Next morning I completed my leftover 6 hours in under 20 minutes. Since then I rarely work all nighters. Now if I have to pull massive hours on a design project I will break the day into 2 hour blocks then catnap for 20 mins. This usually keeps me at about 90% efficiency for 20 hours a day, 7 days a week. I've only done this on two occasions for a month, and I'm not sure how much longer I would have lasted, but it works.

So catnap. I use 23 and 46 minutes as my number. 46 minutes feels like a nights sleep and I struggle later that night. 23 minutes keeps me on my game but doesn't break my sleep patterns.

Look at your diet, look at your supplementation. Part of feeling better is keeping an insurance against the factors that surround us tipping the balance and our bodies going under.

I feel amazing till I don't. Then I'm broken. The day before I got plantar fasciatis I was doing 30kgs dumbbell jumping burps superseted with 60m sprints. I wore a pair of flip flops for the first time and the next day I couldn't walk. It's that simple.

You want to Perform Better...

This is the one that the real science fiction stuff will occur. Sure on one side of it you're going to get the tactical/crossfit type 'primitive' approach. Highly innovative basic movements that get results, but will have a high risk of injury.

But bio-implants have already been taking off and this area will explode. We first devolved into this back when William Gibson write his cyberspace novels back in the late 80s and early 90s.

I use the nike fuel band. Then you have google glass. There are so many options but we're not far away from having computer implants and other tech that can be implanted into us to optimise our functionality. It just a question of time before we become cyborgs.

to be continued....
